Population or model

Healthy habitual coffee drinkers aged 18–30 after 24 hours of supervised sleep deprivation and 12 hours of fasting.

Sample

16 adults: 8 men and 8 women; mean age 24.0±3.5 years. All completed all four visits.

Visual and computerized alertness tests, trail-making and symbol-digit tests, brain and peripheral oxygenation, magnetic-resonance spectroscopy metabolites and self-reported adverse effects.

Reported result

Trail-making time favored H₂ water and H₂-plus-caffeine versus control; symbol-digit errors favored H₂ water or caffeine versus control. Caffeine outperformed H₂ for reaction time. The authors reported no significant overall alertness differences among interventions, and brain oxygenation, total hemoglobin and peripheral oxygen saturation were null. Selected brain choline-to-creatine ratios changed; no participant reported an adverse effect.

HRW Natural Health Products supplied the tablets and supported the work, alongside Serbian public and academic organizations; authors declared no conflicts.
