Methods at a glance
Male Wistar rats exposed to free air or cigarette smoke.
20 rats randomized to four groups; n=5 per group.
28 days.
Oral hydrogen-rich water 5 mL once daily or 5 mL twice daily, given 30 minutes before exposure to five cigarettes/day for 28 days.
H₂ dissolved in drinking water — H₂ only, not Brown's gas.
1.0–1.5 ppm dissolved H₂, measured with a hydrogen meter after preparation.
Not applicable — oral water, not gas inhalation.
No O₂ was co-delivered.
Water plus free air, water plus cigarette smoke, and two hydrogen-rich-water dosing groups plus cigarette smoke.
Outcomes and reported result
Lung NF-κB p65 by ELISA and semi-quantitative histopathological inflammation score.
The twice-daily 5 mL group had lower NF-κB p65 than cigarette-smoke control (p<0.01). Both hydrogen-water groups had lower histopathological inflammation scores than smoke control (p<0.05).
